Congratulations to Randy Schekman, James Rothman, and Thomas Südhof, who have been awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work in understanding how the cell organizes its transport system. Randy Schekman used the awesome power of yeast to identify and characterize genes required for vesicle traffic. James Rothman characterized these and other proteins in mammalian cells, and Thomas Südhof showed the critical role of vesicle trafficking in nerve cells.
